Santorini owes its unusual beauty to a series of volcanic eruptions that have given the island a truly unique and impressive coastline. The island's capital, Fira, stands perched on the edge of a spectacular cliff and, with its maze of narrow streets, traditional white-washed houses and magnificent views, is a photographer's paradise. Equally beautiful, and the subject of many Greek postcards and calendars, is Oia, the perfect place from which to witness some of the island's most spectacular sunsets. In contrast, the eastern side of Santorini consists of a long stretch of black volcanic beaches, the most popular of which fringes the lively seaside resort of Kamari, a 20 minute drive from Fira. As many of our properties in Santorini are positioned in tiers clinging to the rocky and steep cliffs, they are not all suitable for guests with walking difficulties. Fira is the capital of Santorini and the most important village. Imerovigli is located on the cliffside further up the coast from Fira and looks out over Skaros Rock which, until 1800, was part of the land and had a castle which housed all of the administrative offices of the island.
