| Three fingers of land separated by two vast horseshoe-shaped bays form the peninsula of Halkidiki. It is a region vastly rich in beautiful landscapes, attractive coastlines and a powerful historical past. With most of the tourist developments on Kassandra (the westernmost prong), the other two are just as attractive with Sithonia (in the centre) mostly still thriving from its agricultural land. Then, furthest east is Athos, home of the Holy Mountain where monasteries occupy remote locations on high cliffs. Women visitors are still banned from this all-men domains and the best way to view those amazing buildings is by joining one of the cruises which operate trips along the coast. |
