Mykonos' main industry is 'tourism' with a strong accent on everything very stylish, much evident in beautifully presented hotels, boutiques, bars, clubs and restaurants. Often called the 'St Tropez of the Aegean', Mykonos owes its popularity to foreign visitors who fell in love with the picture-postcard setting and never returned home. Mykonos Town, is everything you expect a Greek island to be: white-washed cubic houses, balconies overflowing with flowers and one of the prettiest harbour fronts. It is a well-known fact that Mykonos is attractive to gay crowds, but, truthfully, it is an island for all whether you are in your element at an all-night party or seek more traditional entertainment in a local taverna. For beaches, the island spoils you with heaps of stunning bays easily accessible from town.
Aghios Yiannis
Located some 4km from Mykonos Town, the beach at Aghios Yiannis featured in one of the scenes of the film 'Shirley Valentine'.
