Skiathos is the best known of the Sporades islands. Green and fertile, it also offers a coastline fringed by a wide selection of beaches, not least Koukounaries, one of the finest sandy bays in the whole of Greece. Skiathos Town, a splendid natural harbour, sits on two hills where white-washed red-roofed houses tumble down the waterfront. A pretty promenade and a bustling harbour lined by many cafés and tavernas enhance all the attractions of Skiathos Town, also home to an excellent choice of local craft shops. Buses and boats which operate regular services from the capital provide easy access to the beaches and holiday resorts along the southern coast. Nightlife in Skiathos takes in everything from exotic cocktails to local specialities, making it an appealing destination for all, including those who fancy a little island-hopping with opportunities to visit nearby Skopelos and Alonissos.
